‘…my heart is bleeding 😭, it feels a bit like heartbreak…’ a friend of mine texts me after his car had to be written off.
Why do cars have such a great emotional significance to many of us? Is it their materiality? The superhuman speed we achieve while driving? Or is it the power and invincibility we feel behind the
steering wheel?
My research takes me to places shaped by the omnipresence of cars: junkyards, remote car parks marked by skid marks, accident sites, Michas slot car basement and Ku’damm, where Valentin hangs out in his leased BMW, dressed in a velvet suit.
No one can fully explain the passion for cars to me, but one thing is certain: they are objects of projection, and way more than a means of transport.
